Often when you try to select a color from one inch paint swatches in a store it can take a few attempts. This can be a costly approach. You want to get it right the first time. Also, there are many factors you might not have considered like lighting and its affect on color; the use of bold vs. neutral colors; or how to give exciting pops of color while still respecting the need for continuity as spaces flow from room to room in a home. Exteriors can be especially tricky. In addition to being a large, highly visible space, you need to decide whether or not to make a statement or blend in with the neighbors.
What is the first thing to do?
I suggest starting by looking through home magazines for inspiration. This is what I do in my own home. This will help you identify colors and styles that you really love.
Then ask yourself: “What do I already have in my home that I can incorporate into the new color scheme?” “What is my favorite color and how can I use it in my home?”
It is helpful to walk through your neighborhood to get a feel for your surroundings. Especially if you are painting the exterior. What colors did you like or dislike?
Finally, consider how you react to the various colors that you see. Do certain colors make you happy? Which colors really turn you off?
If you decide that the color purple always puts a smile on your face, don’t think you can’t work it into your home. I can help you find just the right shade in the right space to ensure smiles on a daily basis.
